"Alaska Amateur Radio Emergency Service on TV

NBC TV Alaska reports on a statewide exercise that prepares volunteers to use ham radios incase of emergency

A disaster strikes Alaska. The internet is down and phones are silent. The question then becomes, how does information get out? According to these experts, by using technology proven in the 1800's.

The Amateur Radio Emergency Service, or ARES, held a simulation training exercise, Saturday, across Alaska. The communication method this group uses is the ham radio. The ham radio is something people may not think would be useful in a disaster, but according to Harry Lind AL6F with the National Weather Service, it is a backup to every other form of communication.

"Because it is radio-to-radio, it does not require the internet," said Lind. "It does not require anything other a radio and a power source, and you can communicate all around the world. "

Most know the ham radio has the capability to allow people to talk long distances. What is not as well known is it can also send text, similar to email through a program called Winlink.

"It allows actual text data to be able to send from either VHF (Very High Frequency) from repeater to repeater, or HF (High Frequency) radio-to-radio," stated Lind.

According to Lind, the ARES scenario for this training exercise saw a earthquake generate a tsunami that destroyed parts of Anchorage and the surrounding area. The National Weather Service ham radio station's role was for operators to send mock weather updates to different areas. This is the first ARES exercise that the Fairbanks National Weather Service has participated in. According to Nic Patton, the ARES liaison for the National Weather Service, a lot of the messages they sent went to Wasilla, which acted like a hub for the scenario."
